MV SHIPYARD
Proposal

THANK YOU for visiting this website that is here to educate you about the proposed 48 Boat Marina in the West Arm of Lagoon Pond.

The Lagoon Pond Association, after lengthy research, has serious concerns  about the NEGATIVE effects a 48 boat marina will have on the Pond, especially in the West Arm.  Our concerns are outlined below:

What You Can Do to Help Stop the Marina

1. Email the Martha’s Vineyard Commission (MVC) (morrison@mvcommission.org) with your concerns. You can read the LPA Board’s detailed letter of concerns on this site below.

The main themes are:

1. The potential destruction of shellfish habitats in the west arm, closures to shell fishing (which will impact the island’s shellfish industry), and broader pollution that will threaten the work of the two shellfish hatcheries on the Lagoon that supply seed shellfish to all six island towns.

2. Prioritizing a private, money-making venture of one business and the convenience of 48 boat owners over the community’s continued use and enjoyment of a beautiful public resource.

3. Safety issues to passive recreation with 48 additional motorboats using the Lagoon and traffic snarls and pedestrian safety with 43 additional vehicles entering and exiting the proposed parking lot on Beach Road in the height of the season.

4. Further pollution of an already endangered body of water. Tisbury and Oak Bluffs are currently under a state mandate to clean up Lagoon waters and efforts have been underway for years to improve water quality. A new marina will do nothing to improve water quality and will set back hard-earned progress in this critical area.

5. Remind the MVC of its Mission: to assist towns with planning expertise; and protect and enhance their environment, economy, character, and social fabric.

2. Help Alert Others to the Issue by putting a lawn sign on your property. Please contact us at info@lagoonpondassoc.org with your address and how many you would like. We will deliver them to you.

The lawn signs say:

The MV Shipyard Proposal has the potential to directly impact the Lagoon Pond.
According to State Authorities, a permanent shellfish closure will result in the Lagoon area of the marina due to the nature of the marina expansion.
